Communiqué of the 1212th Meeting of the Peace and Security Council, held on 20 May 2024, on Updated Briefing on the Political Transition in Burkina Faso, Gabon, Guinea, Mali, and Niger.

Abstract

The Council requested the AU Commission to undertake the following: i. Expeditiously take requisite steps in ensuring the deployment of a high-level mediation mission to Niger; ii. In consultation with the concerned countries and working closely with existing Partners, mobilize requisite political, technical, financial, and humanitarian and stabilization support aimed at accompanying the referred countries in political transition towards restoration of stability, democratic governance and constitutional order; iii. Facilitate sharing of information and cooperation within the framework of the Nouakchott and Djibouti Processes, as well as the Accra Initiative; iv. Continue working in collaboration with the respective transitional governments; v. Provide requisite technical support, upon request; vi. Use the Good Offices to facilitate dialogue between the countries in political transition and ECCAS and ECOWAS, respectively; vii. Facilitate informal consultations with the countries in political transition, in line with Article 8(11) of the PSC Protocol in order to determine areas requiring timely interventions and political support to ensure swift return of the concerned countries to constitutional order; and to; viii. Provide quarterly briefing reports to Council. The Council also requested the Chairperson of the AU Commission to appoint a High-Level Facilitator at the level of a sitting or former Head of State to engage with the Transitional Authorities.
