Communiqué of the 1253rd Meeting of the Peace and Security Council, held on 19 December 2024, on the Consideration of the Situation in Somalia and Post-ATMIS Security Arrangements.

Abstract

The Council noted the briefing on Somalia’s situation and post-ATMIS security arrangements. It commended the Federal Government of Somalia for progress made by its defense and security forces, supported by the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), emphasizing the importance of sustaining gains in the fight against Al-Shabaab. The Council paid tribute to Troop and Police Contributing Countries (T/PCCs) for their sacrifices and honored those who lost their lives or were injured. Concern was expressed over Al-Shabaab's persistent threat, and the PSC condemned attacks on Somali and ATMIS forces. The Council reaffirmed AU support for Somalia’s government by enhancing security force capacity and emphasized the importance of a smooth transfer of security responsibilities. It urged Somali stakeholders to prioritize national interests, welcomed recent regional agreements, and stressed the need for adequate funding for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). Finally, the Council reiterated its commitment to the matter.
