Communiqué of the 1243rd Meeting (Open Session) of the Peace and Security Council held on 1st November 2024 on Youth, Peace and Security in Africa.

Abstract

The council emphasized several key actions for advancing the Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) agenda in Africa. Member States must strengthen structures that enable youth to actively engage in governance, peacebuilding, and peacemaking, and allocate resources for implementing National Action Plans (NAPs) to sustain YPS at all levels. Integrating peace education in schools and investing in youth capacity-building is vital for effective engagement. Member States should promote youth participation in peace efforts, support cultural activities for cohesion, include young women in peace processes, and establish partnerships for regional peace. Engaging the WiseYouth network in diplomacy efforts and enhancing youth access to research for addressing emerging threats like climate change and digital technology impacts are also critical to advancing the agenda.
