South Africa held its General Elections on 29 May 2024 to elect members of the National Assembly and Provincial Legislatures, marking the seventh election since the end of apartheid. The AUEOM observed the elections, assessing compliance with democratic standards and highlighting progress in fostering competitive political environments, such as the inclusion of independent candidates and gender equality measures. Despite a tense political atmosphere, the elections were peaceful, with significant voter participation and active civil society involvement. The IEC's management was commendable, though issues like malfunctioning Voter Management Devices (VMDs), long queues, and inadequate polling procedures posed challenges. Women’s representation remained limited despite societal support for gender equity, and campaign finance requirements were seen as restrictive for emerging parties. The elections marked a turning point for South Africa’s democracy, with the ruling ANC losing its majority for the first time since 1994, leading to coalition government scenarios. While post-election peace prevailed, the AUEOM recommended measures to enhance future elections. Key suggestions included integrating gender equity legislation, improving VMD reliability, clarifying campaign regulations, and strengthening campaign finance laws. Additionally, increasing voting stations, reducing voter density per station, and improving polling staff recruitment and training were emphasized to enhance electoral efficiency. These steps aim to address logistical issues, promote inclusivity, and reinforce public confidence in South Africa's democratic processes.en
