Report of the Chairperson of the Commission During the 4th Meeting of the Peace and Security Council on the International Conference on the Great lakes Region, 6 April 2004, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Following the Rwandan Genocide in 1994 and the two wars in The Congo (1996-1997 and 1998-1999), the OAU adopted, between 1995 and 1998, several resolutions underscoring the need to organize an International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, with a view to finding a lasting solution to the root causes of these tragic events, which contributed to the weakening and destabilization of many countries in the region. This report reviews developments in the preparatory process of the Conference. It also gives an account of the support from the international community as well as the current and future role of the AU in the process.
