Communiqué of the 1304th Meeting of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, Held on 30 September 2025, on the Briefing on the Situation in the Sahel Region.

Abstract

The African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC), at its 1304th ministerial meeting on 30 September 2025, reviewed the deteriorating situation in the Sahel, marked by terrorism, unconstitutional changes of government, and humanitarian crises. The PSC reaffirmed its commitment to the sovereignty and unity of Sahelian states and called for inclusive, accelerated political transitions involving all stakeholders. It welcomed the appointment of President Évariste Ndayishimiye as AU Special Envoy for the Sahel and commended President João Lourenço’s engagement efforts. The Council urged stronger regional cooperation through intelligence sharing, border control, and collective security operations, alongside socio-economic recovery and state presence in liberated areas. It appealed for sustained support from AU Member States and partners, endorsed the creation of an AU Task Force for the Sahel, and encouraged AU and international humanitarian efforts. The PSC also welcomed Angola’s proposal to host a Sahel Summit and the upcoming Aswan Forum, emphasizing the need for African-led solutions and continuous engagement on the region’s stabilization and development.
