Communiqué of the 1222nd Meeting of the Peace and Security Council, held on 15 July 2024, on The Role of Mediation and Reconciliation in Conflict Resolution in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

Abstract

The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), at its 1222nd meeting, expressed grave concern over the escalating attacks by M23, ADF, and FDLR in eastern DRC, demanding immediate cessation and withdrawal of armed groups. The Council called for the reinforcement of the Luanda and Nairobi Processes for mediation and reconciliation, urging direct talks between DRC and Rwanda. The Council also highlighted the need for socio-economic empowerment programs and effective disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) initiatives. The AU Commission was requested to enhance coordination and provide humanitarian aid, while acknowledging the contributions of SAMIDRC and other forces.
