Communiqué of the 1255th Meeting of the Peace and Security Council, held on 24 January 2025, on the Consideration of the Half-Year Report of the Chairperson of the AU Commission on Elections in Africa: July to December 2024 and the Outlook for 2025.

Abstract

The Peace and Security Council adopted the Half-Year Report of the AU Commission Chairperson on Elections in Africa for July to December 2024, commending H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat for supporting electoral processes, capacity building, and observer missions. It congratulated Member States for organizing peaceful, transparent elections and encouraged the implementation of AU recommendations. The Council commended increased domestic election funding, efforts in managing results, and preventing post-election violence. Appreciation was expressed to the AU Commission, AU Election Observation Missions and stakeholders for promoting democratic governance. The Council welcomed Gabon’s announced presidential election for April 2025 and urged continued AU support. It acknowledged Botswana and Morocco for training electoral experts and encouraged broader compliance with the ACDEG. The Council also called for increased AU funding for election activities, urged 2025 elections to uphold democratic standards, and emphasized preventive diplomacy alongside observation missions. Finally, it urged the AU Commission to publish the 2023 Annual Report on Elections and decided to remain actively engaged on the matter.
