Publication: Communiqué of the 1234th Meeting of the Peace and Security Council held on 2 October 2024, on the Peace, Security, and Development Nexus in Africa: Bridging Gaps Between Policy and Practice.
Abstract
The Council expressed deep concern over ongoing violent conflicts and crises in Africa, emphasizing the need for enhanced peacebuilding, stability, and the achievement of "Silencing the Gun" and Agenda 2063. Recognizing the critical link between peace, security, and development, the Council called for practical steps to bridge policy and practice through a Nexus Approach, requesting a matrix on past AU peace and development actions since 1991. The Council urged continued implementation of the revised Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD) Policy, enhanced regional integration, and inclusive participation of women and youth. The Council highlighted the role of the private sector, particularly contributions from the AfDB and Afreximbank, and called for further collaboration within AU institutions, support for Member States addressing conflict roots, and operationalization of the AU Humanitarian Agency in Kampala. The Council also reiterated the request for the Chairperson of the Commission to further enhance the collaboration and coordination among the different departments within the AU Commission and AU Specialized Agencies, in order to effectively support the PSC in promoting the Nexus Approach, as well as the request for the Chairperson of the Commission to regularly submit an annual report to the PSC on the measures taken to this end.
