Publication: Communiqué of the 1216th Meeting of the Peace and Security Council held on 19 June 2024 on the Discussion on Refugees, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Humanitarian Action in Africa.
Abstract
At the 1216th Ministerial-level meeting of the African Union's Peace and Security Council, held on 19 June 2024, key discussions focused on the humanitarian crises affecting refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and the need for enhanced humanitarian assistance across Africa. The Council marked the 20th anniversary of its establishment and World Refugee Day, reaffirming its dedication to humanitarian efforts under various AU protocols. It expressed serious concerns over the exacerbating humanitarian conditions caused by conflicts, extremism, climate change, and other disruptions in regions like the Horn of Africa and the Sahel. The communiqué emphasized the need for member states to tackle the root causes of conflicts and bolster resilience against climate impacts. The council also praised member states hosting refugees and IDPs for their solidarity and called for global support to bolster their efforts in sharing the burden. The AU Commission was urged to lead a comprehensive response plan, including improving financial strategies for humanitarian aid and operationalizing the African Union Humanitarian Agency to better address the continent’s humanitarian challenges.
