Abstract
The 89th Ordinary Session of the Central Organ of the AU Mechanism for Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution, held on 15 January 2003 in Addis Ababa, was chaired by Ambassador Baso Sangqu. The Interim Chairperson, Mr. Amara Essy, updated on Burundi and his engagement with CNDD-FDD representative Pierre Nkurunziza, who agreed to attend peace talks in Pretoria. The session also reviewed the Central African Republic (CAR) situation and its strained relations with Chad. The Organ supported the Libreville Communiqué, welcomed the CEMAC peacekeeping deployment, and endorsed efforts for inclusive national dialogue in CAR. It urged international financial institutions to resume support and acknowledged regional leaders’ mediation efforts. The Organ encouraged continued AU and CEMAC engagement and requested regular updates on developments.
