Communiqué of the 1265th Meeting of the Peace and Security Council, held on 18 March 2025 on the Consideration of the Situation in South Sudan.
Abstract
The AU Peace and Security Council commended South Sudan’s RTGoNU and its people for their dedication to peace and stability through dialogue and implementing the R-ARCSS. President Kiir was praised for the Tumaini Initiative and inter-party dialogue, with a call for a clear election timetable. The Council urged parties to the Tumaini Initiative to harmonize it with the R-ARCSS. Concern was expressed over escalating violence, including attacks on UNMISS helicopters, with strong condemnation of civilian attacks. IGAD was acknowledged for its role, and the AU urged resource mobilization for electoral bodies. The deployment of NUFs was emphasized, alongside a call to lift the arms embargo. Humanitarian support was encouraged, including DDR/SSR programs, economic diversification, and establishing the Hybrid Court. The AU appreciated international partners and requested continued engagement. The Council also called for the airlifting of military equipment and the deployment of an AU High-Level Panel.
