Abstract
At its 1280th meeting on 23 May 2025, the AU Peace and Security Council reviewed the situation in Libya. The Council reaffirmed Libya’s sovereignty, condemned recent clashes in Tripoli, and called for a permanent ceasefire. It emphasized the need to demilitarize non-state forces, protect civilians, and restore civilian order. The PSC reiterated support for an inclusive, Libyan-led political process and urged swift, simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections. It welcomed the Libyan Reconciliation Charter and called for its implementation. The Council demanded the withdrawal of foreign forces and highlighted plans for a field mission to Libya. It requested relocation of the AU Liaison Office to Tripoli and pledged continued engagement on the matter.
