Communiqué of the 87th Ordinary Session of the Central Organ of the Mechanism for Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution held on 4 December 2002 on (i) the Mission to Sudan and Eritrea by an AU Delegation and (ii) the Situation in Côte d'Ivoire.

The 87th Ordinary Session of the Central Organ of the Mechanism for Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution was held at the ambassadorial level in Addis Ababa on 4 December 2002. Chaired by South Africa, the session reviewed tensions between Sudan and Eritrea, and the evolving crisis in Côte d’Ivoire. The Organ called on Sudan and Eritrea to show restraint, engage in dialogue, and implement confidence-building measures, with AU support. Regarding Côte d’Ivoire, the Organ expressed grave concern, welcomed ECOWAS mediation efforts, and urged regional leaders to promote peace. It supported the establishment of an AU Liaison Office and appealed for international support for ECOWAS peacekeeping and humanitarian aid.
