Communiqué for the 1288th Meeting of the Peace and Security Council, Held on 4 July 2025, on Consideration of the AU Commission Report on Elections in Africa for the Period January–June 2025

Abstract

The African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC), at its 1288th meeting on 4 July 2025, adopted the AU Commission's report on elections held across Africa from January to June 2025, commending Burundi, Comoros, and Gabon for conducting elections and urging implementation of AU recommendations to strengthen democratic processes. The Council emphasized the importance of linking democracy with socio-economic development, praised increased domestic funding of elections, and encouraged compliance with the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG). It also underscored support for upcoming elections in other member states and called for enhanced technical support, preventive diplomacy, and media responsibility. Furthermore, the PSC welcomed AU-UNDP collaboration through AFSIT, endorsed continued assistance for countries in political transition, and reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional governance and peaceful transitions of power.
